College Football Insider - Big 10 Power Poll

9-03-09

COLLEGE FOOTBALL BETTING – PRESEASON BIG TEN POWER POLL

Penn State earned the Rose Bowl birth from the Big Ten last season, but the Nittany Lions weren’t the best ATS team for ncaa football picks fans of the conference. Find out how Sportsbook stacks up the Big Ten for CFB bettors heading into ’09…

1: Iowa Hawkeyes (8-4 ATS, 9-4 SU in 2008) HC Kirk Ferentz seems to have the Hawkeyes going bowling every season. Last year, they did it with a 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS record away from home. It was all about the defense in ’08, as Iowa held its opponents to just 13.0 points per game; the fifth best mark in the land. A lot of that was due to the fact that RBs Shonn Greene and Jewel Hampton carried the ball a whopping 340 times for 2,030 yards last season. Hampton will have to carry the load by himself this year.

Up Next: Home vs. Northern Iowa

2: Penn State Nittany Lions (7-4-1 ATS, 11-2 SU in 2008) Penn State was good enough to be a legitimate National Championship contender last year, but it’s becoming more and more apparent that a Big Ten team will probably have to run the table in order to earn a spot in the title game. Both RB Evan Royster and QB Daryll Clark will be back for an offense that averaged a whopping 38.9 points per game last season. With similar offensive production, the schedule sets up for a potential undefeated run for Joe Pa and the boys.

Up Next: Home vs. Akron

3: Northwestern Wildcats (7-5 ATS, 9-4 SU in 2008) Good for the Wildcats for becoming relevant once again on the college football betting scene! Including a 30-23 loss to Missouri in the Alamo Bowl, Northwestern finished the season by covering four of its L/5 games, which included outright road victories against Minnesota and Michigan. The squad won four games outright for CFB bettors as underdogs in ’08.

Up Next: Home vs. Towson

4: Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-5 ATS, 7-6 SU in 2008) Minnesota earned a bowl bid last year, but it can’t be happy with the fact that it lost its L/5 games by an average of 21.8 points per game. What made college football bettors happy is that the Golden Gophers went from September 6th through October 25th without an ATS defeat. With a difficult non-conference schedule and road trips against arguably the four best teams in the Big Ten, another bowl bid looks very questionable for Minnesota in 2009.

Up Next: Away @ Syracuse

5: Ohio State Buckeyes (6-6 ATS, 10-3 SU in 2008) QB Terrelle Pryor and the Buckeyes narrowly missed out on a Rose Bowl berth last season. If they can exorcize the demons of an awful 35-3 loss to USC last season, they may be thinking about the bigger prize in Pasadena this year. Save a trip to Happy Valley in November, the rest of the schedule sets up quite well for Head coach Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes.

Up Next: Home vs. Navy

And the rest…

6: Purdue Boilermakers (5-5-1 ATS, 4-8 SU in 2008)
7: Michigan State Spartans (6-7 ATS, 9-4 SU in 2008)
8: Wisconsin Badgers (5-7 ATS, 7-6 SU in 2008)
9: Illinois Fighting Illini (4-7 ATS, 5-7 SU in 2008)
10: Indiana Hoosiers (2-8-1 ATS, 3-9 SU in 2008)
11: Michigan Wolverines (2-10 ATS, 3-9 SU in 2008)
